In the Nov 2011 issue of Singapore Women Weekly magazine, it c/w a 1-for-1 dinner deals booklet. And lucky us that there is a deal for a Peranakan restaurant - Spice Restaurant @ Centros.
Since the Empress Dowager & I have been talking about food. And esp Peranakan food. We decided to give this restaurant a try. And also use it as an advance birthday celebration for her. So I made a reservation for four on 19 Nov 2011.
According to the restaurant, this deal is a 3-in-1 3-course set meal. Meaning we will be served 3 mini dishes for each course. And that also means we will be eating most of the restaurant's signature Peranakan dishes.
The 1st Course was the Starter = Kway Pai Tee, Ngoh Hiang and Otak-Otak. Unfortunately I had forgotten to take pics.
The 2nd Course was the Main = plain rice, Sambal Lady's Finger, Ayam Buah Keluak, Assam Fish Curry and Nyonya Spicy Prawns.
All along the Empress Dowager assumed the Ayam Buah Keluak taste awful. Well, assumed = had not tasted before. In fact, it is the first time all of us tasted it. My bro had not even heard nor seen this dish until now. And it is not what we had expected. It is better than we expected. So much so that the Empress Dowager wants to try the recipe herself. Kekekeke!!!
The 3rd Course was Desserts = Pulut Hitam, Yam Ice-Cream and Banana Fritters.
Altho the portions are small, it is very filling. We were already at 75% half-way through the meal.
Overall, it was a good experience for us. Cos it was the 1st time we ate a full-course meal of Peranakan Cuisine.
